Chelsea finished runner-up to Barclays Premier Champs Man United and they were none too pleased about it. Coach Avram Grant left Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and was replaced by Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari who will be charged with bringing the title back to the club. Fans are happy that Frank Lampard has committed himself effectively for the remainder of his top-level career by signing a new five-year deal on Wednesday. Fans aren’t happy that Didier Drogba has been ruled out of the Blues' opening match against Portsmouth, and probably the Wigan Athletic encounter a week later. Scolari has predicted the home match against Tottenham Hotspur on August 31st for a possible return but admits he will not rush the Ivory Coast star back into action. Chelsea is 9-0 SU against Portsmouth since the 1993-94 season.
Portsmouth went out and made a huge sign in the offseason by acquiring tall man Peter Crouch from Liverpool. While Crouch was the big money arrival from Liverpool, coach Harry Redknapp picked up Jerome Thomas, former Arsenal trainee, after deciding his team needed a wide man with pace to complement new striker Peter Crouch. Thomas joins fellow forwards Glen Little, from Reading, and Ben Sahar, on loan from Chelsea, as well as defender Younes Kaboul.
