NFL Preseason Pick: Seattle Seahawks vs San Diego Chargers PDF Print E-mail

The injury plagued Seattle Seahawks will take on the San Diego Chargers tonight at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. The game will broadcast at 8:00pm ET on ESPN's Monday Night Football. The Chargers are a heavy -6 home favorite at Bodoglife.com.NFL Preseason Pick: Seattle Seahawks vs San Diego Chargers

San Diego looked vastly different last week against the Rams, losing 6-7, than they did in pounding the Cowboys 31-17 in week one. However, the team only played three offensive starters in St. Louis and they still outscored the Rams 6-0 in the first half. Tonight the starting unit, with the exception of running back LaDainian Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates, should see more time against the Seahawks.

The Chargers have to be pleased with their 2008 draft, at least through the early pre-season. First round pick Antoine Cason had an interception that he returned for 53 yards last week and third round pick Jacob Hester looks like he will be an adequate replacement for Michael Turner at the backup running back spot. Hester has 108 yards rushing (4.3 yard per carry average) in the pre-season and two touchdowns.

San Diego will be without linebacker Shawne Merriman tonight, who has two torn ligaments in his left knee. The Chargers are uncertain of his status for the regular season opener.

The Seahawks, like San Diego, have been bit by the injury bug. Wide receiver Bobby Engram will not return for at least another month, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will likely miss the final two pre-season games, and wide receiver Deion Branch has still not returned from off-season knee surgery. Seattle is still 2-0 this pre-season despite the poor luck.

Fortunately for Seattle, Hasselbeck and Branch will both be ready to go for the regular season. Hasselbeck's absence, however, has led to an interesting battle for the backup quarterback spot. Charlie Fyre is 22-of-38 for 231 yards but he also has three interceptions. Seneca Wallace has been more impressive, going 15-of-20 for 165 yards and three touchdowns. Both quarterbacks will get plenty of playing time this evening.

Bodoglife.com's line for tonight's game:

Seahawks +6 (-120), Over 37.5 (-110)

Chargers -6 (Even), Under 37.5 (-110)
