We all know who the favorites are to appear in the BCS National Championship Game (USC, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma), but every year there are teams who come out of nowhere to emerge as top contenders. Last season, we saw the South Florida Bulls rise to as high as number two in the country along with the Boston College Eagles to give underdog lovers a thrill before they tailed off. The Hawaii Warriors were perhaps the best underdog of 2007 though, coming out of a mid-major conference to play in a BCS game. And no one can forget Boise State's miraculous win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl two years ago.
While none of these teams have bettors cashing BCS national championship tickets it is never a bad thing to consider value teams which could, especially with how things have gone the past few seasons. Even last year, preseason number one LSU had to survive two losses to make the BCS title game and win it all. The chalk usually slips up along the way which can make things very interesting. Expert College Football Handicapper Dave Price takes a look at three value teams which could get into the BCS picture if a few things go their way in this BCS National Championship sleepers article for Point-Spreads.com.
LSU Tigers: +2000 to win 2009 BCS Title at BetUS.com - While defending champs normally have a large target on their backs, the Tigers will get to fly under the radar a little bit this season with Florida and Georgia getting more BCS hype. Losing defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey and QB Matt Flynn won't be enough to keep this team from ruling a weaker SEC West division. Even without Dorsey, the Tigers still have the best defensive line in the conference, and perhaps the nation. With a strong offensive line and a talented trio of running backs, the offense will still be able to move the football. Les Miles is one of the best motivators in college football, and he will have his guys playing with a chip on their shoulder. Without the pressure they had last season of being preseason number one, the Tigers just might be able to get back in the BCS title game.
West Virginia Mountaineers: +2000 to win 2009 BCS Title at BetUS.com - West Virginia should have been in the BCS title game last season. A shocking loss to Pitt in the season finale kept the Mountaineers from a chance at a national title. They licked their wounds and then went on to punish the Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. A slew of talent remains, including QB Pat White and running back Noel Devine. Playing a relatively easy schedule in a weak BCS conference plays into West Virginia's hands. If they run the table they are in, and that could definitely happen.
Texas Tech Red Raiders: +5000 to win 2009 BCS National Championship Title at BetUS.com - The Red Raiders are far more of a threat to challenge for a national title than this price indicates. I know you guys have heard about the offense at Texas Tech, but the defense is much improved ranking a respectable 45th in the country last season, and that gives them a chance. Texas Tech's offense is the best in the Big 12 and perhaps in the country. QB Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree are rewriting the record books. The Red Raiders will have to get past Oklahoma, but they did so last year. This could be the year that Texas Tech breaks through to the league's elite and challenges for a BCS title.
